One day many years ago, I was showing a wholesale collection in the Sydney showroom to one of our best accounts. The owner had a team of fashion savvy girls who worked the floor and were trying on everything (literally). One of the girls put on a pantsuit with a jacket and just stood there in front of the mirror. The outfit looked terrible. The buyer said “well, you’ve got to style it up a little!” She rolled up the sleeves, popped the collar, kicked her hips out to the side, added a belt and voila, the outfit looked amazing.
Every time I put an outfit together, I say these words to myself “style it up a little”…they resonate with me still today. What item can I add? What can I do to make a particular piece of clothing shine? What will tie back to make a little story? Any outfit you wear, has the ability to look either simple and lack-lustre, or supremely insane. It just takes a little styling and some good attitude.
Take this jacket for example. On the hanger it looks nice…but worn a little off the shoulder, tied at the waist or draped over your bag, adds a real edge to your outfit. Never be afraid to style up a piece of clothing to make it stand out. As long as you’re happy in your decision and back it up with confidence, you can’t go wrong.
Another thing I like to do, is add an extra pieces of clothing. Whether it’s a shirt under your jacket as an extra layer or something tied around your waist, this adds balance and makes everything more interesting. Sometimes I just carry a luxurious jacket over my arm… Well, why not! Ha ha, you love me xx
